Before the beginning of a new year, I create time for self-reflection. I find a quiet corner to think about what new habits I’ve implemented, major career and life accomplishments, as well as the numerous self-limiting thoughts and beliefs that kept me stuck. I rethink the strategies I employed that ended in failure in hopes that the new year will lead to fresh, new perspective for personal and professional growth.
A few years ago (2023) I started implementing a new strategy in hopes that I could not only achieve my goals, but also be much more productive. I started writing a letter to myself every 90 days (or quarterly). I write the letter to my 90-day future self as if I have already completed the goals I’ve set. The goals I write encompass the major aspects of my life I am continuing to improve and hone for a happier, fulfilling life. These areas include: 1) physical health and well-being, 2) professional advancement, 3) personal relationships, 4) spiritual growth, and 5) personal fulfillment/hobbies. I write 3-5 SMART goals for each category.
I started writing SMART goals in 2022 and found that they really helped me achieve success while leading a global project as a newcomer to the battery industry. If you have never heard of SMART goals, it is an acronym that represents what a goal should be – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. In my opinion, this has ensured that I set goals that are realistic, current, and evolving as I grow.
The first full week of the new year is here!
I rarely set resolutions for the new year. This is because I believe that I am evolving daily. Every single day, each of us has the opportunity to redefine who we want to be. I have found that for myself fear is the thing that holds me back. And I am sure I’m not alone in this. Many of us fear the unknown because we do not know what to expect. But, in releasing fear I am finding redemption-filled purpose. What I am learning is that on the other side of fear is fulfillment.

Overarching goals for 2025!
1) Physical Health & Well-being
Everybody knows the saying, “Health is wealth.” I totally agree. During my graduate studies I was not prioritizing my health. For the past 2 years, I dedicated myself to implementing weekly workout sessions and taking time to address my poor nutrition. This year, I want to continue improving my discipline with food. Y’all, it is so delicious though! And it can be very comforting at times. I don’t believe in diets, but I do believe that small effective changes over time can lead to amazing results. I never thought I would sign up and train for a CrossFit Competition, but I did. By investing in my physical health and well-being I have been able to improve my mental fortitude and renew self-confidence.
2) Professional Advancement
We all know that vertical growth at work is nice! But there are other professional skills that I would like to improve. For example, restarting this blog has been no easy feat. It is truly a labor of love. I do it as a challenge to communicate more effectively and to be more creative. To show up in professional spaces as authentically me, because I AM ENOUGH! I want to advocate for diverse voices and perspectives, especially in science. I hope to utilize my site to bridge the gap between students, professionals, and the community.
3) Personal Relationships
BOUNDARIES! I think we all have to learn them at some point in life. And it’s an ongoing mission to conquer. Hahaha! On a serious note, I do look forward to expanding my network and community. Social media is advantageous for keeping in contact with people around the world; nevertheless, it provides a false sense of reality. Everyone is not a supporter. Everyone is not going to like you. But, it’s important to make time for those that do support our dreams and challenge our expectations. It is not only good for our mental health, but also for our personal growth. I look forward to spending more time with family and friends making memories this year. Life is short!
4) Spiritual Growth
I grew up as a 7th generation Presbyterian. Depending on when you met me, you may or may not know that I was a church worship leader for quite a few years. Praying takes practice – just like anything else you want to master. Life can dish some crazy twists and turns, but my faith has kept me pressing forward. This year, I’m expecting great things!
5) Personal Fulfillment/Hobbies
For Christmas my parents gifted me enough money to purchase a new electric piano that I’ve wanted for a while. Recently, I’ve spent more time playing piano so I’m excited to work up more classical pieces (maybe I’ll share). Reading is something that I enjoy but don’t always create enough time for it. Well, here’s to a year of getting back to reading for leisure. Lastly, this blog is truly a passion project. Investing time into this space is something that has already become very fulfilling.
So what goals are you setting for 2025?
I encourage you to think big! As a friend always tell me, “Get out of your own way.” I challenge you to take some time to think about where you see yourself one year from now. What do you want to have accomplished? Anything specific habits holding you back? Face your fears and achieve the unimaginable in 2025!
